Hollow Knight and The Silksong Self-Obsessed
How ‘Fandoms’ spoiled the fun
The much anticipated release of the video game Silksong has finally arrived. A sequel to the wildly successful Hollow Knight, Silksong was originally discussed as downloadable content for the original but scope quickly expanded and they promised a follow up instead. After six years of development, the tiny team of independent developers, ‘Team Cherry’, released the game on September 4th. This, however, is only the story of Silksong itself, the far weirder story is one of a deeply self-obsessed minority of fans who have spent the last six years seizing on any news, from trailers to changes in the digital store-front code, to satiate their need for information. When Silksong’s release was officially announced (just a few weeks ago at GamesCon) the collective meltdown was truly a thing to witness.
I love Hollow Knight and am really excited about Silksong but this ‘fandom’ obsession was unhinged and I need non-nerds to hear about it. But first of all, where did these obsessives come from?
